Q & A

What is the difference between Jungle Honey’s all-natural Certified Australian Eucalyptus BioActive Medicinal Honey and Manuka honey?

Manuka Honey is a monofloral honey made by bees that have collected honey from the nectar of the Mānuka tree (Leptospermum Scoparium). The mānuka tree is indigenous to New Zealand and some parts of coastal Australia. The medicinal properties of Manuka Honey come from an enzyme called methylglyoxal (MGO) which is only  non-peroxide activity (NPA). MGO is measured as mg/kg.
UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) is another term to describe the non-peroxide activity (NPA) in Manuka honey and typically ranges from 5+ to 25+. Manuka honeys are active honeys, meaning that they have antibacterial properties but not antimicrobial properties.
Jungle Honey’s all-natural Certified Australian Eucalyptus BioActive Medicinal Honey is produced exclusively in Australia by bees accessing only three select species of Australian native Eucalyptus Gum Trees (Jarrah, Redgum and Blackbutt). Jungle Honey is a raw Super Active Grade Eucalyptus  honey (TA30+ and above), which contains both Peroxide Activity (PA) and Non Peroxide Activity (NPA). Every batch of our honey is Government Laboratory Certified and are vigorously tested for export quality and assurances. Jungle Honey’s all-natural Certified Australian Eucalyptus BioActive Medicinal Honey has both antibacterial and antimicrobial properties in addition to other key health benefits.

What is Active Honey?

Active honey is honey that has been tested and certified by an independant laboratory to detect antibacterial "activity." Although Manuka Honey is the most commonly known active honey which only conatins Non peroxide Activity (NPA), Eucalyptus Honey on the other hand has a higher Total Activity  which includes both natural Peroxide Activity (PA) and Non-Peroxide Activity (NPA).

What is Peroxide Activity (PA)?

Peroxide Activity is bioactivity caused by the presence of naturally occurring Hydrogen Peroxide in honey. Hydrogen Peroxide is not added to the honey but rather occurs naturally as a product of the bees natural honey making process.

What is Non-Peroxide Activity (NPA)?

Non-Peroxide Activity is bioactivity caused by the presence of other bioactive compounds in the honey.

How does NPA relate to UMF?

In Manuka honey, NPA is also sometimes stated as UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) but they are essentially the same thing. As Manuka Honey does not have Peroxide Activity it has no PA rating and therefore has no Total Activity (TA) rating either.

What is Total Activity (TA)?

Total Activity is the measurement of the honey's anti-microbial quality, it's anti-microbial strength in killing bacteria. Total Activity (TA) = Peroxide Activity + Non-Peroxide Activity
Any honey with a TA rating higher than 10+ has beneficial antimicrobial properties. The larger the TA number, the stronger the antimicrobial effect level of the honey. Honey with a TA rating of above 25 is considered Medical Grade. The table below compares TA ratings with equivalent MGO ratings for Manuka Honey:
